Labor Force Survey

Labor Force Survey, April 2010

Labor Force Survey was conducted in April 2010, on the sample of approximately 7000 households, on the territory of Belgrade, Central Serbia and Vojvodina. Collected were the data on demographic characteristics of all respondents, including the data on working activities for persons aged 15 and over. 20616 persons were interviewed and data on working activities for 18069 persons were obtained.

Unemployment rate, which presents the share of the unemployed in total active population (employed and unemployed), in the Republic of Serbia amounted to 19.2%, i.e. 18.6% and 20.1% regarding male and female population respectively. Unemployment rate in Central Serbia amounted to 20.6 %, in Vojvodina to 20.9 % and to 14.0% in Belgrade.

Employment rate presents the percentage of the employed in total population aged 15 and over and in April 2010 it amounted to 38.1%. There from employment rate for males was 45.5%, while for females it was 31.4%. The highest employment rate was recorded in Belgrade and it equaled 39.6%, then in Central Serbia it was 38.9%, and the lowest rate was noted in Vojvodina, i.e. 35.4%.

Unemployment rate in April 2010 increased by 3.6% if compared to April 2009, while employment rate decreased by 3.5% in the same period.

Unemployment rate in April 2010 increased by 2.6% when compared to October 2009, while employment rate decreased by 2.7% in the same period.

Informal employment rate in April 2010 decreased by 0.8% in comparison to October 2009 and it decreased by 2.4% in relation to April 2009.

Informal employment presents share of persons employed in non-observed (black) sector of economy, out of total number of employed. Non-observed economy covers employees in non-registered companies, employees in registered company, but without any official working contract and without social and pension insurance, and also it includes unpaid family workers.

The main purpose of conducting Labor Force Survey is to collect the data on working characteristics of population and to estimate total labor force in the country, according to international recommendations and definitions, i.e. to provide the data on three basic, mutually exclusive contingents of population aged 15 and over: employed, unemployed and inactive population.

Population is classified in one of the listed groups on the basis of information provided from the questionnaire, regarding the activity of the interviewed persons in the observed week.

Labor force (active population) includes all persons who work (at least an hour in a week) or persons who actively seek job with the aim of providing the basic subsistence.
